Installing e-SPECS on a new server

Last Updated: Jul 16, 2015 09:56AM EDT
Given:

  1. You installed the e-SPECS Server on one machine.
  2. You installed at least one e-SPECS client application (e-SPECS Linx) on a different machine.
  3. You want the e-SPECS Server to be on a different machine but you don't have any projects you need to bring over to the new server machine.
Plan of action:

  1. Install the e-SPECS Server on the new machine.
  2. License both e-SPECS and MasterSpec on the new machine using e-SPECS Administrator.
  3. Reconfigure the DSN on each client machine to point to the new server.
  4. Uninstall the e-SPECS Server on the old machine

To reconfigure the DSN on the client machines:

On a
32 bit machine go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC).

  1. Click the System DSN tab.
  2. Highlight ESPECS40 and click Configure.
  3. The Server: field shows the oldservername\INTERSPEC40. Modify it to be newservername\INTERSPEC40. (Servername is the computer name of the machine hosting the e-SPECS databases.)
  4. Click Next, Next, Next, Finish, Test Data Source.
  5. If you receive the message TESTS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY! Click OK.
On a 64 bit machine, open Windows Explorer (Right click on Start > Explore)

  1. Under the C drive, scroll down to the Windows folder.
  2. Open the Windows folder and find the SysWOW64 folder.
  3. Double click the SysWOW64 folder to open the contents in the right hand pane.
  4. Scroll down past the folders to the individual files. You are looking for a file named odbcad32.exe.
  5. Double click odbcad32.exe.
  6. Click the System DSN tab.
  7. Highlight ESPECS40 and click Configure.
  8. The Server: field shows the oldservername\INTERSPEC40. Modify it to be newservername\INTERSPEC40. (Servername is the computer name of the machine hosting the e-SPECS databases.)
  9. Click Next, Next, Next, Finish, Test Data Source.
  10. If you receive the message TESTS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY! Click OK.

To uninstall the e-SPECS Server on the old server machine

  1. Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
  2. Find e-SPECS Administrator in the list and uninstall it.
  3. Find e-SPECS Database in the list and uninstall it.
  4. Scroll down to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and click it.
  5. Click the Remove button on the right.
  6. On the next screen look for INTERSPEC40: Database Engine in the upper field.
  7. Click the radio button to the left of it to select it.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click Finish. (It will take a few minutes for the uninstall process to complete.)

To manually delete the remaining files on the old server:

  1. On an XP machine, the default location is here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\InterSpec
  2. On newer operating systems like Vista and Windows 7, the default location is here: C:\Program Data\InterSpec (Not to be confused with C:\Program Files.)
  3. Delete the InterSpec folder and its contents. This will delete all e-SPECS data, including the projects, from the old server. (NOTE: This will permanently remove all of the e-SPECS projects that were on the old server.)
